Sketches

Here are the sketches for 1 and 2. I can’t figure out how to put the image in larger than this without it getting cut off.

It is kind of hard to make out, but the top one will be figures with their bodies or clothes outlined in glowing colors. The colors will change as these figures repeat back in space. There will be a textured, dark background, and some kind of transparent abstract object like a bar weaving in and out of the figures, showing more dimension.

The second idea is a setting inside a club. Up close is a silhouette of a posing girl, and in the background there are other silhouettes dancing (maybe with a few glowing outlines or details. Lens flares and “vibrating” or “pulsing” lines will bring in some other bright colors and textures, and I hope to have some sort of environment like a checkered dance floor in the background.

Music Interpretations Research

Techno/Trance

A form of electronic dance music (EDM) that formed in Detroit in the mid to late 80’s.

uses sequencers and synthesizer

Was a merge of eurocentric synthesized music and american post-disco and pre-disco music styles like: House, funk, electric jazz, or electro.

Imagery to think about:

Disco balls, partying, drinking, club drugs, glo-sticks, Dj’s, turn tables, headphones, speakers

Related to clubs, bright colors or neon colors, computerized or digital-like images.

I like the use of this energy-filled glowing tubes or wires and the neon colors. The pattern and repetition of the lines is nice as well.

Crowds of people, colors of all kinds, especially the glow in the dark neon colors and glo-stick colors. Blurred images of the lights shows movement and energy.

Not a fan of the lightening, but the imagery of the headphones and vibrant colors, and even the symbol at the bottom could be abstracted a bit and used.

Love the use of repeated circles, really reminds me of speakers in a club, but can repeated and abstracted. Not a fan of the organic-looking flower petals or whatever is in the background, though.

I like the color green in this, even if it isn’t as bright, vibrant, or neon as the other images. It sort of reminds me of the matrix. I also like the idea of a silhouetted person with headphones on versus maybe just the headphones or just people. The lens flare effect in photoshop might be a good way to make the image look like it is in a club with bright colorful lights. Also, I kind of like the honeycomb pattern even though a shape like that wouldn’t naturally pop into my head when I think “Techno.”

DAFT PUNK IMAGES (techno band)

Robot uniform, rainbow lights, colorful clothes.

Daft Punk DJing. Glowing blue lights.

Daft Punk’s Helmets.

Daft Punk suits in dark. Could use this outlining-glow in the dark look for headphoned silhouette.

LUNAR

Story:

On the birds’ adventure, they discovered many things. They found that they enjoyed sitting in trees and soaking up rays of sun. All day, every day, the birds sunbathed and flew through the bright sky, enjoying what the sun had to offer. The sun blushed in all of the attention that the birds gave it. As the sun set, the birds would fly home and sleep in their row of nests in the apartment. While they were asleep, creatures very much like them, and yet, very different from them, sat in their trees outside. These creatures were enjoying something very much like the sun, and yet, very different from it. The yellow bird awoke in the middle of the night, hearing strange noises from outside the window. “Coo, coo!” he heard, and for the rest of the night he tossed and turned in his nest, wondering with curiosity what was making the sound.

The next day, the little yellow bird told all of his bird friends about what he had heard all night. The birds leaned in, curious as well. They all decided that they would investigate what happens when they go to sleep. “How are we today, birds?” the sun asked as they hopped out the window. The birds told the sun the story, and the sun grinned. The played all day in the sunshine, as usual, but when the sun began going down, it scooped up the birds in its rays. A large crescent rose up in the night, with a bird on it, as well. The sun explained that the crescent was called “The Moon,” and the bird was called an “Owl.” Delilah chirped at the owl, and the owl cooed at the bird. All night, the birds and owls played, happy of their new discoveries of each other. The birds’ investigation of the night was a success, and the owls now knew much more about the daytime. As the night grew, the birds began getting sleepy, just as the owls reached their peak of playtime. Now it made sense why the owls cooed only at night, and the birds chirped only in the day. The birds waved goodbye, as they hopped one by one off the tree, and flew to the window of the artist’s apartment. Each hopped one by one into their nest, and fell asleep. The owls continued to play all night in the darkness they loved, and as the sun began to rise, it was their bedtime now. And this is how it would be. The bird’s bedtime was the owl’s morning, and the bird’s morning was the owl’s bedtime. While the birds had a midnight snack, the owls had their early breakfast. In the evenings, sometimes, they still had a chance to play, but mainly left the owls to their moon, and them to their sun.

For all of my pieces, I came up with the composition for the extensions. Most of these are supposed to look energetic. I used thick black lines and bright colors for pop art, for black and white, I wanted to show the difference between night and day using the contrast of black and white. Art Nouveau is very gold and silver because of the glowing sun and moon. For cubism, the composition is still but I wanted it to show movement and energy, so I tried a few different things to abstract the owls and branches. The last piece is expressionism, which I used tons of expressive line and sort of a swirly expressive background.

Panels 1 & 2 Character Design Continuation

Here is Panel 1, Black and White. I think it needs something else,  maybe some gradients. It seems too flat. Maybe some gradients will help.

Panel 2: I may add some kind of texture to the rays of sun. I feel kind of stuck on this one as well. I think it feels flat like the first one.

Description of Art

I will be doing my artwork digitally.

1.Black and White.

1

2. Pop Art. I will be using heavy line, in a comic book style. The colors will be bright and vibrant, mostly using warm colors. Depth will be shown by the birds receding in size as they go back in space. Also, the curved lines on the sun rays will pull the eye in toward the sun. There will be light on the bird’s faces, and the bodies will be darker with heavy shadow.

2

3. Cubism. For this piece I will be using mainly low-key purples and browns, keeping the colors mostly neutral and subdued. There will be mostly dark colors. Value will change to make things look a little more 3-d. I broke up the organic shapes and made them more square-like, geometric shapes. The I tried to show depth by transforming the 3-d form into a 2-d form with lines and shapes. The birds and branches go back in space and get smaller to show more depth.

3

4. Art Nouveau. I will be using silver and gold metallic colors for this piece, mainly to represent the sun and moon. The moon will be silver, because lunar is also a term associated with silver. This piece will be more of a vignette, with the center being brighter, and the edges fading to darker colors. There will be a vine border with olive green, beige, and crimson flowers. The birds will be perched in these vines alone the border, and also flying around in a circular movement around the center moon and sun. The shapes will be mostly organic.

4

5. Expressionism. This piece will be blissful and happy. There will be a variety of mixed, expressive colors, probably on the pastel side. There will be trees going back in space, also silhouetted. There may be some flowers coming out of the branches to tie this and the last piece together. The trees may look similar to cherry blossom trees. There will be expressive shaping of the sky and the gradient from the night side to the day side. Most of the shapes in this piece will be organic.

Delilah

On a breezy September day, a bird was made,

Not born, like most, I’m quite afraid.

She was cast from a mold, made by an artist

She was a piece of art, but with a twist.

This bird was alive and so aware,

Such a case was unseen, unheard of, so rare.

Her name was Delilah, named like a pet,

What she didn’t know is that she’d be part of a set.

Before she knew it, another appeared.

“Who is this new creation?” Delilah feared.

The second was the same, but instead, was blue

Delilah peered in awe, so very confused.

The second tweeted in chipper tones,

“We are the same, just like clones.”

A third appeared, this one green.

And out popped a fourth, from the bird-making machine.

A fifth and sixth came in time,

One purple like a flower and one gold with a shine,

How many more should they foresee?

This artist is on a mold-making spree!

Two more came, a total of eight,

And that was all the artist felt to create.

“Off you go, to see and explore!”

The artist yelled to the birds she so much adored.

Each hopped out the window, one by one

Waving goodbye, before their adventure begun…
